# Find and compare clubs

> Search clubs by place and type, compare a shortlist and check membership status from your AI app

Use Private Clubs to find clubs in a place, compare the ones you like and check whether they take new members. Each task works in your AI app once you [install Private Clubs](/mcp/connect). Where the REST API also fits, a second tab shows the call. The [API quickstart](/api) covers the basics.

## Search by place and type

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="MCP">
    Ask your AI app:

    ```text theme={"system"}
    Find golf clubs in Arizona
    ```

    The tool that fits is `search_clubs`. Set `state` to a US state or Canadian province, `type` to a club type such as `golf` or `yacht`, and `query` to part of a club's name, type or city. It returns up to 25 clubs, best known first, with a link to each club's profile. With no `state` and no place in `query`, the search covers every country.

    In MCP, `type` is an exact match on the club's stored type, so `golf` does not include `country_club`.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="API">
    ```bash theme={"system"}
    curl "https://www.theprivateclubs.com/api/v1/clubs?type=golf&state=Arizona"
    ```

    Filter with `type`, `state`, `country` and `q`, which matches part of the club name. In the API, `type=golf` also returns country clubs. Outside the US and Canada, add `country` next to `state`, for example `country=United%20Kingdom&state=Scotland`.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

## Find clubs with an open waitlist

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="MCP">
    ```text theme={"system"}
    Which private golf clubs in Arizona have an open waitlist?
    ```

    Add `waitlist: true` to `search_clubs`. It keeps the clubs whose `waitlist_status` is `open` and drops the rest.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="API">
    ```bash theme={"system"}
    curl "https://www.theprivateclubs.com/api/v1/clubs?type=golf&state=Arizona&waitlist=open"
    ```

    `waitlist` takes a comma-separated list of waitlist values, such as `open,waitlist`. `by_invitation` also matches clubs stored as `invite_only`.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

An empty list means no club in that search is listed as open. Few clubs carry the `open` status. In October 2026, the Arizona golf search above returned an empty list. Try a wider search, or check each club's status as shown below.

## Compare two or three clubs

```text theme={"system"}
Compare Casa Cipriani New York and Spring Place New York
```

The tool that fits is `compare_clubs`, with `slugs` set to two or three club slugs, such as `casa-cipriani-new-york` and `spring-place-new-york`. Each club comes back with its location, profile `url`, waitlist status, course data, founded year, amenities and website.

A slug that matches no listed club is left out without an error, so take slugs from a search first. Comparing is an MCP task, so there is no API tab.

## Check membership status

```text theme={"system"}
Is the waitlist open at The Estancia Club?
```

The tool that fits is `get_membership_info`, with `slug` set to the club's slug, such as `the-estancia-club`. It returns the club's name, type, `waitlist_status` and profile `url`, plus a note on where to see fees. The status values mean:

* `open`: listed as open to new members
* `waitlist`: listed with a waitlist
* `by_invitation` or `invite_only`: by invitation
* `closed`: listed as not accepting new members
* `unknown` or `null`: not known

See [waitlist values](/reference/conventions#waitlist-values). A status can change, so confirm it on the club's profile.

## See fees and enquire

Private Clubs answers carry no fees. To see them, open the club's profile from the `url` in the answer. Account holders see fees there. With a free account, you see a price range. Select **Enquire** on the profile to contact the club. Searching, saving, comparing and enquiring with clubs are free.

## Use the answers well

Private Clubs never returns membership fees. Account holders see fees on each club's profile at theprivateclubs.com.

Cite Private Clubs (theprivateclubs.com) and link the club's profile. See the [data license](https://www.theprivateclubs.com/data/license) for commercial use.
