# Club types

> The 15 club types, how the API groups them and where legacy types go

Every club has one stored type. There are 15 current types, and each has a browse page at `https://www.theprivateclubs.com/clubs/{type}`. The API's `type` filter also groups some older types into the current ones.

## Current types

| Type | Browse page | API `type=` also matches |
| - | - | - |
| `golf` | `/clubs/golf` | `country_club` |
| `city` | `/clubs/city` | `social`, `arts`, `cigar`, `dining` |
| `yacht` | `/clubs/yacht` | None |
| `athletic` | `/clubs/athletic` | `tennis`, `wellness` |
| `beach` | `/clubs/beach` | None |
| `equestrian` | `/clubs/equestrian` | None |
| `ski` | `/clubs/ski` | None |
| `automotive` | `/clubs/automotive` | None |
| `aviation` | `/clubs/aviation` | None |
| `outdoor` | `/clubs/outdoor` | `hunting`, `fishing`, `shooting`, `adventure` |
| `business` | `/clubs/business` | None |
| `workspace` | `/clubs/workspace` | None |
| `wellness` | `/clubs/wellness` | None |
| `dining` | `/clubs/dining` | `wine` |
| `residential` | `/clubs/residential` | None |

`wellness` and `dining` are types of their own, and they also sit inside a group. So a `wellness` club appears for both `type=wellness` and `type=athletic`, and a `dining` club appears for both `type=dining` and `type=city`. A `wine` club appears for `type=dining`, but not for `type=city`.

## How the API and MCP match types

The API and the MCP tools treat `type` differently.

* **API.** `type` matches the groups in the table above. Send it in lower case: `type=GOLF` matches nothing. A legacy value matches only the clubs stored with that exact type, so `type=country_club` returns country clubs alone. The one exception is `wine`, which reads as `dining`: `type=wine` and `type=dining` return the same clubs.
* **MCP.** The `type` argument of `search_clubs` and `get_clubs_by_state` is an exact match on the stored type, in any case. It does not group, so `golf` there leaves out clubs stored as `country_club`. Search each type when you need both.

The MCP tool description lists 13 types: `golf`, `city`, `yacht`, `athletic`, `beach`, `equestrian`, `ski`, `automotive`, `aviation`, `outdoor`, `business`, `wellness` and `dining`. `workspace` and `residential` also work.

## Legacy types

These older types now live under a current type:

| Legacy type | Now |
| - | - |
| `social`, `arts`, `cigar` | `city` |
| `wine` | `dining` |
| `tennis` | `athletic` |
| `hunting`, `fishing`, `shooting`, `adventure` | `outdoor` |
| `country_club` | `golf` |

A legacy browse page answers with a 308 redirect to its new page. For example, `/clubs/tennis` redirects to `/clubs/athletic`. `/clubs/country-club` and `/clubs/type/country_club` both redirect to `/clubs/golf`.

In the API, `wine` is grouped under `dining`, the page its browse URL redirects to. Some clubs are still stored with a legacy type, such as `country_club`, so you can see one in the `type` field.

## Browse URLs

`https://www.theprivateclubs.com/clubs/{type}` is the canonical browse page for each current type. Link to that form.
